Ian is a founding member of the iconic St Kilda Basketball Club which grew over the period time from 1959 to 1981 to become Victorian, Australian Club, the inaugural NBL champions and Rated No 6 in the World Club Championships played in Brazil. Along the journey the Club also produced 9 Olympians. Ian played for 10 + years including 9 years as Captain and played more than 900 games for the Saints. During that time, he also served as Club secretary and the Business Houses representative on the VABA executive.
His 40-year career with multinational company Unilever Ltd employment took him and his family to Brisbane in 1969 where he coached the Brisbane team which successfully won the Northern Conference and 10th in the first Aust Club Championships. They returned to Melbourne in 1970 where Ian became Assistant Coach to Ken Cole. In 1974 they moved to Sydney where he coached the Ryde Eastwood team in Division One and was secretary of the Sydney Basketball Council. They returned to Melbourne in 1986 after 6 years in New Zealand where he rejoined the Club and played with the Clubs Vets Team before a further move to Sydney and later Singapore before Ian retired in 2000
Ian’s first appearance with the Myths and Legends was Alice Springs in 1990. Subsequently he has played and coached in 16 tournaments. Interestingly Gordon Watson, Ken Burbidge, Ian Farr and Brian Kerle who all played with Ian in the Saints 60s teams are still active members of Myths and legends
Glenda is Ian's wife of 60 years and they have two daughters, Wendy and Dianne and three grandchildren.
Ian was made a Life member of Myths and Legends in 2018.
