Gavin Eddy – Basketball Life Member Story
(with apologies to anyone I’ve accidentally missed)

1974
I started my basketball journey in the Under 10s at Waldau Primary School. My very first game was at Leeds Street, Doncaster — a large shed with rings at either end and strong Dr. Naismith vibes.

1975
My EDJBA career began with the Doncats Under 10s. The Saturday competition is still going strong today. I later moved across to Templestowe in the same domestic competition, playing there right through until I was 18. I was fortunate to have my dad coach many of those teams along the way.
I also played a bit of Friday night Championship basketball with Bulleen in the Under 16s, 18s and 20s, mostly at the old Albert Park stadium.

Around 1980
I started playing senior men’s basketball at Bulleen, and over the next 45 years I’ve continued playing senior domestic basketball across many venues — Oakleigh, Jordanville, Nunawading, MSAC, Ringwood, Warrandyte, Doncats and Diamo.
No matter where I played, the epicentre of my basketball life was always Sheahans Road.

1982

A Thursday night game at Bulleen unexpectedly changed his life. After breaking his leg while playing, his trade schooling was delayed until early 1983.

When he enrolled in a new class, he met the woman who would later become his wife — a reminder that the friendships, moments, and impact of basketball often extend well beyond the court.

Non-playing years

My kids had no option — they all played domestic basketball for Park Orchards and Championship basketball for Warrandyte. I coached, assisted and did committee work with both clubs. I was also lucky enough to be involved in two USA school tours, which were an amazing experience.

Myths – from 2003
Jack Gibson roped me into the Myths tournament in 2003, followed by Panpacs in 2004, Australian Masters, Worlds in Sydney and many more. I’ve probably represented the Myths in 50-plus tournaments and doubled up with some great mates at Westies and Wildcats.
Through the Myths journey I’ve met some truly fine chaps. I also faced a few challenges as a team coordinator, but it’s been fantastic seeing guys meet new mates, play ball and “get loose” interstate — just like I have.

2012
A special highlight was playing a mixed game alongside two sons, my daughter and my son-in-law.

1999 – present
Ballistyx senior domestic team — top blokes.

2020
Escaping Dan’s lockdown under a thinly disguised plan to watch the Tigers win a grand final in Brisbane, I packed my basketball gear and managed to sneak in a few games with Big Tommy at Coomera.

1974 – now
The highlight?
All of it.
